Creates protein from RNA

Initiation

• mRNA binds to small subunit of ribosome
  • Ribosome binding of mRNA binds to complementary sequence
• Aminoacyl tRNA binds to start codon of RNA
• Large subunit of ribosome binds, allowing translation
  • Has E, P, A sites
  • Acceptor, Performer, Exit

Elongation

• Extends polypeptide chain by moving through sections
• tRNA moves to A site, anticodon base pairs with mRNA codon
• Amino acid in P site is transferred to amino acid of tRNA in A site
• Codon shifts back using elongation factors

Termination

• Terminates when stop codon is reached
• Release factor binds to stop codon
• Ribosome subunits separate from each other
